Irish Breakfast

A thing that happened on BART.

everyone has to commute

A little story from my train-riding adventures in San Francisco.

Anyway, since the people who read this are pretty much 100% my friends, and my friends are pretty much 100% queers and/or language nerds, maybe one of you can tell me what the proper pronoun is for a drag queen who is in costume but not actively performing.

I’m inclined to say male pronouns, since drag queens typically identify as male-bodied people who only perform the female gender, not adopt it. But if a drag queen was in costume, I would want to refer to them in their female performer name. This is a quandary. Someone should ask RuPaul.

yeah, I lean towards male in this case, since they were in costume but not actually acting as the female persona. the female persona would probably not be the type to ride public transportation, anyway.
I would, however, defer to RuPaul as the ultimate authority.

I could imagine different drag queens preferring different pronouns in that situation, but using female pronouns seems unlikely to offend regardless.

I’m just glad that other people are as interested in the subject as I am. It’s a good topic for endless discussion.
